Although African food remains largely underrepresented in the international culinary scene, Africa is home to many great culinary delicacies that will make any foodie drool in awe. With the influx of migrants emigrating abroad, many African restaurants have been opening up in major cities around the world and likewise exposing people to the rich delicacies the continent has to offer. Of course, we had to pay tribute to the continent’s diverse culinary scene with a list of some of Africa’s finest cuisines.
1. Jollof rice
Although the heated rivalry between Ghanaians and Nigerians over who makes the best Jollof rice continues, this dish consisting of rice simmered in a hearty broth of tomatoes and spices remains a staple in many West African nations. It is a simple, one-pot dish that will leave your taste buds dancing. And the great thing about Jollof rice is that you can find it in pretty much any West African restaurant.
One of my personal favorites, this Cameroonian dish is an underrated delicacy that consists of stewed bitterleaf, peanuts, and either crayfish or beef. It is the perfect savory amalgam of spices and fresh vegetables, and although it might be harder to find than Jollof Rice, it is worth tracking down. And of course, don’t forget to eat this dish with a lovely accompaniment of fufu or bâton de manioc.
Although the name changes depending on the region, Alloco is a sweet and savory Ivorian dish consisting of fried plantains accompanied with a spicy pepper sauce. It can be eaten as a main dish or as a side to grilled fish or Kedjenou.
4. Doro Wat
Of course, we couldn’t make this list without featuring East African cuisine! Doro Wat is a popular Ethiopian stew consisting of a Berbere (red pepper sauce) spice mix, fresh vegetables, and chicken. It is typically eaten with Injera, a spongy, slightly sour Ethiopian flat bread. Ethiopian cuisine is actually widespread in the states (particularly Washington state and in DC), so you won’t have trouble finding a restaurant that serves this dish.

Since the dish is very prominent throughout a large span of countries in Africa, mostly the west, the ingredients may vary. The Senegalese version of Maafe contains sweet potatoes and carrots. Peanut butter lovers are in luck because this soup can be cooked with it! Probably the most curious fact about Maafe is that it can be made as a sauce so you can apply it to some of your preferred meals! It is creamy, delectable, and a pleasant introduction to West African food for people who have never tried it.
